Benguela Railway
The Benguela Railway is a Cape gauge railway line that runs through Angola from west to east, connecting to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa. It terminates at the port of Lobito, where Angola exports a variety of products including minerals, food, and industrial components. The railway is 500 km long, with a maximum design speed of 90 km/h and a design capacity of 20 million tons of cargo and 4 million passengers per year. It has 67 stations and 42 bridges, with the highest point at 1,854 meters above sea level. The railway was constructed in the early 20th century by the Portuguese and was used to export mineral riches from the Congo to Europe. It reached an operational peak in 1973, but was heavily damaged during the Angolan Civil War and is now mostly in disuse, with only 340 km of the railway remaining operational.learn more on wikipedia
