Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II, which took place from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945. The Germans launched the attack through the Ardennes region between Belgium and Luxembourg in an attempt to stop Allied use of the port of Antwerp and split the Allied lines. The Germans achieved a surprise attack, but were ultimately thwarted by American resistance and the reinforcement of thinly placed troops. The farthest west the offensive reached was the village of Foy-Nôtre-Dame, where the U.S. 2nd Armored Division stopped the German advance on December 24, 1944. Improved weather conditions allowed air attacks on German forces and supply lines, and by December 26, 1944, the siege of Bastogne was ended by the arrival of Patton's U.S. Third Army. The battle continued for another month before the front line was restored.learn more on wikipedia
