Battle of Mactan

Magellan, a Portuguese-born commander serving the Spanish Empire, led an expedition to subdue Mactan Island under the Spanish crown. On April 27, 1521, Magellan's forces clashed with Lapulapu, the chieftain of the island, in a battle that resulted in a disastrous defeat for the Europeans and the death of Magellan. Lapulapu's forces, numbering in the hundreds, were able to overwhelm the small Spanish contingent due to the terrain and the limitations of the armor worn by the Europeans.
