Appalachian Mountains

The Appalachian Mountains are a mountain range in eastern to northeastern North America, stretching from Newfoundland, Canada to Central Alabama, USA, covering a distance of approximately 2,050 miles. The range is older than the Rocky Mountains, with geologic processes starting 1.1 billion years ago, and features rocks formed during the Precambrian era. The highest peak is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina, at 6,684 feet, and the range is home to the Appalachian Trail, a 2,175-mile hiking trail that runs from Maine to Georgia.
