Apollo
The Apollo program was a US human spaceflight program carried out by NASA from 1961 to 1972, which successfully landed the first men on the Moon from 1968 to 1972. The program was first conceived in 1960 as a three-person spacecraft to follow the one-person Project Mercury, and was later dedicated to President John F. Kennedy's goal of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to Earth. The program achieved its goal on the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, and five subsequent missions also landed astronauts on the Moon, with the last mission, Apollo 17, landing in December 1972. The program encountered setbacks, including a major fire in 1967 that killed the Apollo 1 crew, but ultimately set several major human spaceflight milestones, including sending crewed missions beyond low Earth orbit and returning 842 pounds of lunar rocks and soil to Earth.learn more on wikipedia
