Antarctic Ocean

The Southern Ocean, also known as the Antarctic Ocean, is a body of water that surrounds Antarctica and lies south of the 60th parallel. It has a size of approximately 20,327,000 km2 and is the second-smallest of the five principal oceanic divisions. The maximum depth of the Southern Ocean was surveyed in 2019 and found to be 7,434 meters at a point called the "Factorian Deep". The Southern Ocean is important for its role in the global thermohaline circulation and has been affected by climate change, which has increased ocean stratification and may cause the circulation to slow or collapse.
