Al-Aqsa Mosque

The Al-Aqsa Mosque is the main congregational mosque or prayer hall in the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem. The mosque was originally built by the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik or his successor al-Walid I in the 7th century, and has undergone several renovations and expansions over the centuries, including rebuildings after earthquakes in 746 and 1033. The mosque has been used as a palace by the Crusaders, and its function as a mosque was restored after the area was conquered by Saladin in 1187.
