The plot follows Edward Lemuel, a struggling actor with a disfiguring facial condition, who undergoes an experimental treatment and assumes the identity of a wealthy and successful real estate agent, Guy Moratz. As Guy, he auditions for and performs in an off-Broadway play based on his life, which leads to a complicated relationship with the play's writer and star, Ingrid Vold, and a confrontation with a man with a similar condition, Oswald.
