2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel
On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian nationalist militant groups launched a coordinated attack from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel, the first invasion since the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The attack, known as Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, involved 7,000 Gazans breaching the border and resulted in 1,139 deaths, including 695 Israeli civilians, 71 foreign nationals, and 373 members of the security forces. The attack also saw the kidnapping of 250 Israeli civilians and soldiers, with dozens of cases of rape and sexual assault reported. The international community denounced the attack, with 44 countries labeling it terrorism, while some Arab and Muslim-majority countries blamed Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories. The attack was the deadliest in Israeli history and the deadliest for Jews since the Holocaust.learn more on wikipedia
