1984 Sikh Massacre
The 1984 anti-Sikh riots in India were a series of organised pogroms against Sikhs following the assassination of Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. Government estimates suggest that around 2,800 to 3,350 Sikhs were killed nationwide, although other sources estimate the number of deaths to be between 8,000 and 17,000. The riots were sparked by Operation Blue Star, a military action to secure the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and were widely seen as an assault on the Sikh religion and identity. The Indian government has been criticized for its handling of the violence, with many officials and politicians implicated in the killings. Despite efforts by human rights organizations, the government has yet to prosecute those responsible for the mass killings, and many perpetrators remain at large.learn more on wikipedia
