1968 Olympics
The 1968 Summer Olympics were held from October 12 to 27, 1968, in Mexico City, Mexico, marking the first Olympic Games in Latin America, a Spanish-speaking country, and the Global South. The US won the most gold and overall medals for the last time until the 1984 Summer Games. The Games were the first to use an all-weather track and electronic timekeeping equipment. The host city was chosen on October 18, 1963, and the torch relay recreated Christopher Columbus's route to the New World. The logo is a Mexican cultural icon, and a pink chacmool jaguar and dove of peace were symbols of the Games, which were later used in protests. The South African team was excluded from competing due to apartheid, and the Tlatelolco massacre occurred during the Games, with the government's repression of student protests resulting in significant violence.learn more on wikipedia
