Zimbabwe declares state of disaster over prolonged drought crisis

Zimbabwe has declared a national disaster due to a severe drought affecting the country. The cause of the drought is the climate event known as El Niño. President Emmerson Mnangagwa has called for international aid, estimating that $2 billion is needed to help millions of people who are going hungry due to the drought. The grain harvest for this season is expected to provide only about half of the cereals required to feed the nation.
