Words on ammo in CEO shooting echo common phrase on insurer tactics: Delay, deny, defend
The CEO of UnitedHealth's insurance unit, Brian Thompson, was shot and killed in a targeted attack in New York City on Wednesday. The incident occurred just before the company's annual investor conference at the Hilton on Sixth Avenue. Police have released multiple photos of the suspect captured by security cameras during his stay in New York. The company has removed its executive list from its official website as police intensify their investigation. Surveillance footage shows a masked gunman calmly approaching Thompson from behind, ignoring a rush of people passing by. The killer is believed to have been lying in wait, shooting Thompson multiple times around 6:45am local time. The words "deny, defend, and depose" were found emblazoned on the ammunition, echoing a phrase used by insurance industry critics.
It takes analysis of tens of thousands of hours of footage from all different camera sources.
Clearly, this was not a random act. Our preliminary investigation sees this as a targeted shooting, but we are moving closer to apprehending him and taking this dangerous person off the streets of our country.
When you look at the number of hours from the shooting of a fully masked individual and having to bring him to justice, you realize how fast the New York City police department is moving.
We're following up on every single tip that comes in.
We have video of him entering the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We don't have any video of him exiting so we believe he may have gotten on a bus.
From watching the video, it does seem that he's proficient in the use of firearms as he was able to clear the malfunctions pretty quickly.
It's a very busy bus terminal, we want to make sure we have the right bus. But we're working through that right now, this is all new information.
While our hearts are broken, we have been touched by the huge outpouring of kindness and support in the hours since this horrific crime took place.
Many Americans view these companies as driven by profit rather than a commitment to serve their customers.
The longer they can delay and deny the claim, the longer they can hold onto their money and they're not paying it out.
