On the one-year anniversary of Evan Gershkovich's detention in Russia, the White House has reiterated its stance that journalism is not a crime and that Gershkovich was in Russia for his job as a reporter. However, Russian authorities allege that he was attempting to obtain Russian defense secrets. According to multiple reports, including one from The Wall Street Journal's Editor in Chief Emma Tucker, Gershkovich has been held at Moscow's Lefortovo prison since his arrest at a steakhouse in Yekaterinburg, over 1,100 miles east of Moscow. The Kremlin claims that he was caught "red-handed" trying to obtain state secrets.
