Venezuelan authorities arrest campaign staffers of opposition candidate

Attorney General Tarek William Saab announced arrest warrants for Maria Corina Machado and nine other individuals, including her campaign manager Magalli Meda, for their alleged involvement in anti-government conspiracies. A video circulating on social media shows Machado screaming for help as uniformed officers attempt to put her into the back of an SUV. Saab stated that two of the arrested individuals were detained on Wednesday. The announcement was made hours after an independent panel at the U.N. Human Rights Council reported increased repression efforts by the Venezuelan government against real or perceived opponents. Machado and Meda have been identified as the women in the viral video.
