2024 Uruguay Presidential Election

Uruguay heads to runoff with centre-left candidate in the lead

The 2024 presidential election in Uruguay is headed for a runoff on November 24 between two candidates. A center-left rural mayor pulled ahead of incumbent-party candidate Alvaro Delgado in the first round, with the outcome coming as no surprise. However, a third candidate, Yamandu Orsi, from the ruling center-right coalition of outgoing president Luis Lacalle Pou, also performed well and split the conservative vote. As a result, a second round of voting is necessary to determine the winner, as no candidate achieved an outright majority of over 50%.
