Second World War Bomb Disposal
Unexploded World War II bomb to be disposed of at sea from Plymouth
An unexploded World War II bomb was discovered in the Keyham area of Plymouth, weighing approximately 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds). The discovery led to one of the largest peacetime evacuations in U.K history, with over 3,000 people being evacuated from their homes. The bomb was transported through the city and taken to the Torpoint Ferry slipway on Friday evening. Over 10,300 people and 4,300 properties were affected by the evacuation. The plan was to detonate the bomb either in the evening or the following morning. The bomb was then safely transported on a boat for its final journey to be blown up by divers in the sea. The evacuated residents were later notified that they could return to their homes.
