Ukraine to end transit of Russian gas to EU

Russian gas supplies to the EU via Ukraine are set to cease on January 1, with the expiration of a five-year deal between Naftogaz and Gazprom. This marks the end of a decade of strained relations between Russia and Ukraine, sparked by the 2014 Russian annexation of Crimea. In the absence of a new agreement, Russia will no longer be able to send gas to EU countries through Ukraine, although it will still be able to supply gas to Hungary, Turkey, and Serbia through the TurkStream pipeline. The halt in Russian gas supplies will mark a significant shift in the EU's energy landscape, with liquefied natural gas from Qatar and the United States becoming a key alternative source of supply.
