US officials say Israel will target only military sites in Iran in any future attack
The Israeli government has informed the Biden administration that it will refrain from targeting nuclear enrichment sites in the event of a retaliation against Iran. This move is expected to reduce the likelihood of an immediate all-out war between Israel and Iran. Israeli and US officials have been in regular contact, debating the best course of action to respond to Iran's October 1 ballistic missile salvo. However, the Israeli government has maintained that it will decide unilaterally on the form of any retaliation. The comments from Netanyahu's office come after reports emerged that the Israeli prime minister had assured US President Joe Biden that Israel would not attack sites associated with Iran's nuclear program or oilfields prior to the US presidential election.
We listen to the opinions of the United States, but we will make our final decisions based on our national interests.
We have an opportunity to cut off the head of the snake.
The solution is a ceasefire. We are not speaking from a position of weakness; if the Israelis do not want that, we will continue.
When it comes to the scope and nature of the bombing campaign that we saw in Beirut over the past few weeks, it's something that we made clear to the government of Israel we had concerns with and we were opposed to.
