US doctors perform world's first genetically edited pig kidney transplant

Massachusetts General Hospital announced that for the first time, a genetically modified pig kidney has been transplanted into a living person. The patient, identified as Richard "Rick" Slayman of Weymouth, Massachusetts, underwent a successful four-hour surgery and is currently recovering well. He is expected to be discharged soon. This breakthrough marks a significant step forward in providing more readily available organs for patients in need. Previously, two men had received heart transplants from pigs, but both died within months.
