US charges Russian military officers with conspiracy to disrupt Ukraine's critical infrastructure systems

The Russian GRU military intelligence agency has been indicted in Maryland for waging a cyber campaign against Ukraine, known as WhisperGate. The campaign targeted civilian infrastructure and computer systems unrelated to the military or national defense. The indictment was widened to include 26 NATO allies, including the United States. Six Russian nationals were charged with conspiracy to hack, exfiltrate data, leak information, and destroy computer systems associated with the Ukrainian government. Microsoft reported that WhisperGate was part of a broader campaign aimed at coordinating destructive cyberattacks against critical infrastructure and other targets in Ukraine, potentially with kinetic military action.
