US authorities arrest top Sinaloa cartel leaders in Texas
Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia, a 76-year-old Mexican drug lord, and Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Lopez, 35, have been arrested in El Paso, Texas, and are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to make and distribute fentanyl. The two men co-founded the Sinaloa cartel, one of the biggest and most powerful criminal organizations in Mexico, responsible for a wave of violence. They are accused of involvement in fentanyl trafficking, which US Attorney General Merrick Garland has described as the "deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced." The arrests are part of a crackdown on Sinaloa cartel leaders, with US officials taking into custody two other alleged leaders of the cartel. Zambada Garcia has been wanted by US authorities for decades and is known for his role in orchestrating the cartel's smuggling operations while maintaining a relatively low profile.
This structure theoretically gives the heads of the independent drug trafficking groups the ability to share resources – like smuggling routes, corrupt contacts, access to illicit chemical suppliers and money laundering networks – without sharing profits or having to answer to a main chain of command.
The justice department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member, and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable.
The U.S. government itself is saying that they had been making agreements with Guzmán [López] for a long time.
They also say that there were people in military uniform. Military uniform from Mexico, from the United States? Where?
We need to know everything, because the lawyers say that a son of Joaquín Guzmán was the one who arrested him.
Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced, and the Justice Department will not rest until every single cartel leader, member, and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable.
The Sinaloa Cartel has a very strong bench of possible leaders who could take over including El Chapo's brother.
