US accuses Russia of interfering in 2024 election campaign through state media outlets
The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on several Russian individuals and entities, including the editor-in-chief of RT, a state-run media network. The sanctions are in response to allegations that Russia is using state-run media to spread disinformation. The US government has also accused RT of employing American social media influencers to further its disinformation campaigns. The FBI has sought to seize 32 internet domains allegedly involved in a "malign foreign influence" operation. The actions are part of a broader effort to counter foreign influence in the US, particularly in the context of the 2020 presidential election. The US government has also accused Russia of using RT to exacerbate US political divisions and weaken public support for American aid to Ukraine.
It is an obvious operation, an information campaign ... that was long prepared and that is needed ahead of the last stage of the electoral cycle.
The only winner of the US election is the US private military industrial complex.
Russia is taking a whole of government approach to influence the election including the presidential race.
We will be relentlessly aggressive in countering and disrupting attempts by Russia and Iran, as well as China or any other foreign malign actor interfere in our elections and undermine our democracy.
The sites we are seizing today were filled with Russian government propaganda that had been created by the Kremlin to reduce international support for Ukraine, bolster pro-Russian policies and interests and influence voters in the United States and other countries.
Treasury will not waver in our commitment to safeguarding our democratic principles and the integrity of our election systems.
Today's action underscores the US government's ongoing efforts to hold state-sponsored actors accountable for activities that aim to deteriorate public trust in our institutions.
We believe Mr. Putin was witting of these actions.
