US Winter Storm Brings Blizzards, Disrupts Life for Over 62 Million People
ai generated text
A severe winter storm has impacted the United States, with over 60 million people in its path. According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, this storm could be the heaviest snowfall in over a decade for some areas. The NWS has activated blizzard alerts in Kansas and Missouri, and extended winter storm warnings to Washington DC on the East Coast.
That means… we are getting thundersnow/thundersleet! This just underscores that snow/sleet rates are pretty heavy - avoid travel if at all possible!
For some, this could be the heaviest snowfall in over a decade.
Significant icing expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations up to two inches and ice accumulations between one quarter and three quarters of an inch.
Persons should delay all travel if possible. If travel is absolutely necessary, drive with extreme caution and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.
Areas of heavy snow will spread eastward through the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians tonight, reaching the northern Mid-Atlantic by Monday morning.
For locations in this region that receive the highest snow totals, it may be the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade.
This winter storm will likely cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions on our roads and could cause significant power outages – just 24 hours before it gets dangerously cold.
We see far too many wrecks out there for people that do not have to be on the roads, so I want to ask: Stay inside. Stay safe with your family.
It's snowing so hard, the snow plows go through and then within a half hour the roadways are completely covered again.
Please please please, stay home. This is not the time to go out and venture and take in the sights and see the scenery.
I'm encouraging all Virginians, visitors, and travelers to stay alert, monitor the weather forecast, and prepare now for any potential impacts.
It's going to be pretty cold for a good part of the week.
