US Surgeon General Declares Gun Violence a Public Health Emergency
US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy has declared gun violence a public health crisis, calling for a ban on automatic rifles, universal background checks for purchasing guns, regulation of the industry, and laws restricting use in public spaces. He hopes to remove politics from an issue that has bitterly divided lawmakers, stating that a majority of Americans or their family members have experienced gun violence. This advisory is the first major report from a surgeon general and aims to alter the perception of gun violence's danger, similar to how a 1960s report on tobacco led to changes in its regulation. The declaration comes after two consecutive weekends of widespread shootings across the country, with Murthy emphasizing that people want to be able to walk through their neighborhoods safely.
It is now time for us to take this issue out of the realm of politics and put it in the realm of public health, the way we did with smoking more than a half century ago.
It will take the collective commitment of our nation to turn the tide on firearm violence.
I want people to understand the full impact gun violence is having on the United States.
We don't have to continue down this path, and we don't have to subject our children to the ongoing horror of firearm violence in America.
Firearm violence is an urgent public health crisis that has led to loss of life, unimaginable pain, and profound grief for far too many Americans.
America should be a place where all of us can go to school, go to work, go to the supermarket, go to our house of worship, without having to worry that that's going to put our life at risk.
For every one life lost, there are two people who are shot and injured and are experiencing mental and physical health consequences, family members who grieve the loss of a loved one, witnesses to these incidents, and millions who read about and hear about gun violence every day in the papers.
People want to be able to walk through their neighbourhoods and be safe.
