US Supreme Court to Consider Access to Abortion Medication Mifepristone
The Supreme Court is set to hear oral arguments on March 26, regarding the use of the abortion pill, mifepristone. This is the first abortion-related case the court has taken since a majority of the current justices overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. The dispute centers around the marketing of mifepristone via telemedicine and an appeal by the Biden administration. A group of anti-abortion doctors have asked the court to restrict access to this drug, claiming that its FDA approval in 2000 was unlawful. However, a majority of justices have expressed skepticism about the legal standing of these organizations to bring the case forward. The Supreme Court's decision could potentially preserve access to medication abortion for nearly two-thirds of all abortions in the US last year, allowing patients to receive it through the mail without an in-person doctor visit.
