US Supreme Court Rules Partial Immunity for Donald Trump in Official Acts
The US Supreme Court has issued a landmark decision, throwing out a lower court's rejection of Donald Trump's bid to shield himself from criminal charges related to his efforts to undo his 2020 election loss. The ruling marks the first time since the nation's founding that the Supreme Court has declared that former presidents may be shielded from criminal charges in any instance. The decision, which was made by a 6-3 majority of conservative justices, holds that a president has immunity for "official acts" but is not immune for private actions. The ruling sends the case back to a lower court and likely will delay any trial Trump may face until after the 2024 election.
