US Lifts Bounty on HTS Leader Following Damascus Talks
ai generated text
The United States has engaged in formal talks with the leader of the Islamist rebels, Ahmad al-Sharaa, in Damascus. The talks were characterized as "good" and "thorough" by U.S. diplomats. According to the top diplomat for the Middle East, Barbara Leaf, the discussions included a promise from al-Sharaa to fight terrorism. Leaf also stated that based on the talks, the U.S. would not pursue the $10 million reward for information leading to al-Sharaa's capture.
Daesh, the PKK and their affiliates -- which threaten the survival of Syria -- must be eradicated.
In the upcoming period we do not believe that any power will continue to collaborate with terrorist organisations. The heads of terrorist organisations such as Islamic State and PKK-YPG will be crushed in the shortest possible time.
What our government would like to see is a Syria that can stand on its own two feet, that can regain, like its neighbour, Iraq, a full measure of sovereignty over its own affairs.
We fully support a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned political process that results in an inclusive and representative government which respects the rights of all Syrians, including women, and Syria's diverse ethnic and religious communities.
If I'm to judge by today, Iran will have no role whatsoever -- and it shouldn't, frankly.
I also communicated the importance of inclusion and broad consultation during this time of transition.
We will be looking for progress on these principles and actions, not just words.
We also discussed the critical need to ensure terrorist groups cannot pose a threat inside of Syria or externally, including to the US and our partners in the region. Ahmed al-Sharaa committed to this, and so, based on our discussion, I told him we would not be pursuing the 'rewards for justice' reward offer that has been in effect for some years.
So this is fraught, but we know almost certainly that absent our engagement, absent our leadership, that's the way it will go.
There are no guarantees at all. We've seen too many times one dictator can be replaced by another.
