US Imposes Sanctions on Maduro Allies Over Disputed Election Results
The US has imposed new sanctions on Venezuelan officials, targeting leaders of the National Electoral Council (CNE) and the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ), in response to the disputed presidential election results. The sanctions are aimed at prompting "deeper reflection" by officials aligned with President Nicolás Maduro. The election results, which declared Maduro the winner, have been rejected by the US and several countries in the West and Latin America. The opposition claims that its candidate, Edmundo González, won the election, but the CNE has not published detailed voting tallies to support Maduro's victory. The sanctions also include military, intelligence, and government officials, in addition to senior figures in the CNE and TSJ.
The Treasury Department is targeting key officials involved in Maduro's fraudulent and illegitimate claims of victory and his brutal crackdown on free expression following the election, as the overwhelming majority of Venezuelans call for change.
Rather than respecting the will of the Venezuelan people as expressed at the ballot box, Maduro and his representatives have falsely claimed victory while repressing and intimidating the democratic opposition in an illegitimate attempt to cling to power by force.
The fight is to the end, when all our families can finally be reunited on Venezuelan soil.
