US Government Opens Criminal Investigation into Chinese Swimmers' Doping Cases

A recent scandal has emerged involving 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for the banned heart medication trimetazidine in January 2021. Despite this, they were allowed to continue competing and 11 of them are set to participate in the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted that traces of the substance were found in the kitchen, but it is unclear how the swimmers were able to avoid punishment. The International Swimming Federation has ordered its top administrator, Brent Nowicki, to testify as a witness in a US criminal investigation into the matter. The FBI and Justice Department have launched an investigation into how antidoping authorities allowed the elite Chinese swimmers to escape punishment and win medals.
