US Continues to Support Israeli Military Operations in Lebanon with Additional Troops and Warplanes
The US and Israel have a growing rift in their relationship, with Israel disregarding US efforts to impose a cease-fire in its war against Hezbollah. Despite US entreaties, Israel has conducted a massive attack that killed Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah. In response, the US is deploying additional forces to the region, estimated to be between 2,000 and 3,000 troops, to bolster security for existing US troops and support Israel's defense. The deployment includes fighter squadrons and air-defense units. This move is seen as a contradiction to the US's desire to limit military operations in the region, which could lead to unpredictable escalation. The timing of the deployment, just 37 days before the presidential election, adds to the complexity of the situation.
Dozens of munitions hit the target within seconds with very high precision, and this is part of what is required to hit underground sites at this depth.
I'm more aware than you might know, and I'm comfortable with them stopping. We should have a cease-fire now.
That 2,000-pound bomb that was used, that's a Mark 84 series bomb, to take out Nasrallah.
We see more use of guided munitions, JDAMs, and we continue to provide those weapons.
But at the same time, there are a couple other things that are true as well, which is that, number one, military pressure can, at times, enable diplomacy. Of course, military pressure can also lead to miscalculation. It can lead to unintended consequences, and we're in conversation with Israel about all these factors now.
I think people are safer without him walking around... but they will try to recover.
If you want to get those folks back home safely and sustainably, we believe that a diplomatic path is the right course.
Initial available videos of the strike show that numerous large air-delivered bombs were used.
BLU-109s give up explosive weight to be able to penetrate targets better than a MK84.
