UNRWA chief: Palestinian aid agency at "breaking point

UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, has faced significant challenges as it has lost $450 million in donor funding due to allegations that 12 of its employees were involved in a Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2022. The agency's leader, Lazzarini, has expressed deep regret and concern over the situation, stating that UNRWA's ability to fulfill its mandate given through General Assembly resolution 302 is now seriously threatened. Israel has imposed further restrictions on the agency's operations and there have been calls for its closure. UNRWA was founded in 1949 following the creation of Israel.
