UN says nearly 70 percent of Gaza deaths are women and children
The United Nations Human Rights Office has condemned the high number of civilian casualties in the ongoing war in Gaza, with a recent report highlighting "unprecedented" levels of international law violations. The report, which has not been named, found that nearly 70% of verified deaths were of women and children, with the youngest victim being a one-day-old boy and the oldest being a 97-year-old woman. The UN's Human Rights Chief, Volker Turk, has described Israel's actions as an "apparent indifference" to civilian life, and blasted the "wanton disregard" for the "rules of war". The UN has confirmed 8,119 fatalities, with 3,588 being children and 2,036 being women, during the first six months of the conflict. The reports emphasize that civilians in Gaza have borne the brunt of the attacks, with the UN stating that international law was violated since Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel sparked the war in the Gaza Strip. Israel has stated that it targets Hamas and takes steps to mitigate risk to civilians, but the UN's findings suggest a starkly different reality.
Civilians in Gaza have borne the brunt of the attacks, including through the initial 'complete siege' of Gaza by Israeli forces.
It is essential that there is due reckoning with respect to the allegations of serious violations of international law through credible and impartial judicial bodies.
Within this dystopia of destruction and devastation, those alive are left injured, displaced and starving.
We have so far found close to 70 percent to be children and women.
Those in power on all sides act with impunity, while millions across Gaza and the region pay a terrible price.
Humanitarians can speak out on what we are seeing, but only those in power can end this nightmare.
It's evident that it is first and foremost children and women who are paying a price for this senseless war.
The families, widows and children I have spoken to are enduring suffering almost unparalleled to anywhere in recent history.
There has not been a single week since the start of this war when sufficient aid was delivered in Gaza.
There is hardly a building that is not damaged. And large areas looked like Stalingrad after the Second World War. You cannot fathom how intense this indiscriminate bombing has been on this trapped population.
This is in no way a lawful response, a targeted operation of 'self-defence' to dismantle armed groups, or warfare consistent with humanitarian law.
