UN says former Bangladesh government behind "crimes against humanity"
ai generated text
The United Nations has conducted an inquiry into the crackdown on protests in Bangladesh last year, which resulted in the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. According to the UN's human rights office, there are "reasonable grounds" to believe that crimes against humanity have taken place. The inquiry found that the former government oversaw a systematic crackdown on protesters, resulting in up to 1,400 deaths, mostly at the hands of security forces. The UN also reported hundreds of extrajudicial killings and systematic attacks on protesters. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk described the crackdown as a "deliberate and coordinated response" by the former government.
Among our key findings, there are reasonable grounds to believe that officials of the former government, its security and intelligence apparatus, together with violent elements associated with the former ruling party, committed serious and systematic human rights violations.
The testimonies and evidence we gathered paint a disturbing picture of rampant State violence and targeted killings, that are amongst the most serious violations of human rights, and which may also constitute international crimes.
The brutal response was a calculated and well-co-ordinated strategy by the former government to hold onto power in the face of mass opposition.
Accountability and justice are essential for national healing and for the future of Bangladesh.
Those involved in extrajudicial killings must be brought to justice.
The interim government should not let these crimes go unpunished.
