Papua New Guinea Landslide
UN agency says survivors "unlikely" from Papua New Guinea landslide
The United Nations migration agency has warned of a significant risk of disease outbreak in the affected area, which was previously a mountainside community in Enga province. Much of the local water supply flows through the site, increasing concerns about contamination and public health risks.
A devastating landslide occurred in Papua New Guinea on May 24, destroying a remote highland community. According to UNICEF, around 40% of those affected were children under the age of 16 who have been deeply traumatized. The country's disaster agency estimates that approximately 2,000 people may be buried beneath the rubble.
A UN official has stated that it is now unlikely that more victims will be found alive, suggesting a recovery mission rather than a rescue effort.
