UN General Assembly Votes to Demand Israel End Occupation of Palestinian Territories within 12 Months
The United Nations General Assembly has voted in favor of a nonbinding resolution calling for Israel to end its occupation of Palestinian territories within a year. The resolution was passed by a vote of 124 to 14, with 43 countries abstaining. The vote follows a historic advisory ruling by the International Court of Justice in July, which urged Israel to cease its "unlawful presence" in the occupied territories. The resolution asserts that the Palestinian people have the right to self-determination under the UN Charter. The United States, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, and others voted against the resolution. Australia abstained, citing several concerns with the resolution. The resolution is nonbinding, but it is seen as a significant diplomatic move in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Putting an end to the occupation and deterring Israel's hostile behaviour against the Palestinian people is an urgent necessity to maintain international security and what remains of regional stability.
We were disappointed the amendments we and many others sought were not accepted.
Israel has gone too far, and its aggression against the United Nations itself has killed more than 220 UN staff members, as it continues to adopt a law that would criminalise the UN relief agency Unrwa and consider it a terrorist organisation.
It sends a clear message that Israel's occupation must end as soon as possible and that the Palestinian people's right to self-determination must be realised.
Please stand on the right side of history. With international law. With freedom.
Israel's security concerns cannot override the principle of the prohibition of the acquisition of territory by force.
I will implement any decision of the general assembly in that regard.
There is no path forward or hope offered through this resolution today. Its adoption will not save Palestinian lives, bring the hostages home, end Israeli settlements, or reinvigorate the peace process.
The Australian government has a responsibility to use its influence [in] the general assembly to uphold international law.
All states are obliged to help bring an end to Israel's illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories as soon as possible, but Canada just abstained.
