UN Delivers First Food Aid to Darfur, Sudan, After Months of Shortages
The conflict in Sudan between military and paramilitary forces is causing one of the world's worst hunger crises, with approximately 18 million people, or a third of the country's population, facing acute hunger according to the U.N. food agency. The situation is particularly severe in Darfur, where some of the worst fighting is taking place. Recent UN deliveries are estimated to reach around 250,000 people and last for a month. Notably, two WFP convoys crossed the border from Chad into Darfur in late March, marking the first cross-border convoy of WFP assistance to reach Darfur in months.
