UK Labour Party candidate dropped after Israel conspiracy comments
Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom, has suspended two parliamentary candidates within two days due to their comments regarding Israel. The first suspension was for Azhar Ali, who was set to be the party's candidate for the Rochdale by-election in northern England. Ali claimed that the United States had warned Israel about an impending Hamas attack before Israel launched its offensive on Gaza last October, resulting in the deaths of over 1,200 people.
The second suspension was for Graham Jones, Labour's candidate for Hyndburn. Starmer defended his decisions to suspend both candidates after a damaging period during which he initially backed Ali before changing his stance. However, there seems to be a discrepancy between Ali's statement and other reports regarding the sequence of events leading up to Israel's offensive on Gaza. While Ali claimed that the US warned Israel before the attack, other sources do not mention any such warning.
