UK Government Vows Swift Action Against Far-Right Rioters Amid Warning of Severe Consequences
ai generated text
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned far-right protesters who have been involved in violent disturbances linked to the murder of three children earlier in the week. The protests, which have taken place in several English cities, have resulted in the arrest of scores of people and injuries to several police officers. In response, Starmer has met with ministers and police chiefs to discuss how to quell the violence and has announced plans to "ramp up criminal justice" to ensure that those responsible face swift sanctions. The disturbances are believed to have been sparked by disinformation about a mass stabbing that killed three young girls last week, and have spread to multiple towns and cities.
When British people are ignored and labelled 'far-right' … something has to happen.
Addressing the scenes of disorder we have seen, the Prime Minister set out that the police have our full support to take action against extremists on our streets who are attacking police officers, disrupting local businesses and attempting to sow hate by intimidating communities.
There's a clear difference between effectively blocking streets or roads being closed to burning down libraries, hotels, food banks and attacking places of worship. What we have seen is thuggery, violence, racism.
The full force of the law will be visited on all those who are identified as having taken part in these activities.
I guarantee you will regret taking part in this disorder. Whether directly or those whipping up this action online, and then running away themselves.
People in this country have a right to be safe, and yet we've seen Muslim communities targeted, attacks on mosques, other minority communities singled out, Nazi salutes in the street, attacks on the police, wanton violence alongside racist rhetoric, so no, I won't shy away from calling it what it is: far-right thuggery.
Whatever the apparent motivation, this is not protest. It is pure violence and we will not tolerate attacks on mosques or our Muslim communities.
What you've seen on the streets of Hartlepool, London or Southport is nothing compared to what could happen over the course of the next few weeks.
The far right are a reaction to fear, to discomfort, to unease that is out there shared by tens of millions of people.
