Tropical Storm Yagi

Typhoon Yagi Brings Heavy Rain and Strong Winds to Southern China

In response to the storm, Chinese authorities have evacuated some 400,000 people, suspended trains, boats, and flights in the area, and closed schools and offices for a second day. The worst of the storm passed south of Hong Kong on Friday morning.
Typhoon Yagi is a powerful storm that is moving towards southern China, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. As of Thursday, it had maximum sustained winds of approximately 138 miles per hour, equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane. The storm is located about 260 miles east of Haikou, the capital of Hainan province. Yagi is expected to make landfall in the southwest portions of China on Friday evening. The storm has caused severe floods in the Philippines and has more than doubled its strength since hitting the northern part of the country earlier in the week. Scientists attribute the storm's rapid intensification to hotter oceans caused by the climate crisis. Yagi is currently packing winds of up to 240 kph (150 mph), making it a high-end Category 4 Atlantic hurricane.
