Tuvalu to reconsider security deal with Australia amid sovereignty concerns

Tuvalu, a Pacific Islands nation with approximately 11,200 residents, recently elected a new government under Prime Minister Feleti Teo. This new administration has pledged to maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, one of only 12 countries with which Tuvalu has official ties. However, concerns have been raised regarding the lack of transparency surrounding a security and migration pact signed between the previous prime ministers Kausea Natano of Tuvalu and Anthony Albanese of Australia. The agreement offers permanent residency to up to 280 Tuvaluan citizens annually who are affected by climate change. The new government has expressed the intention to seek revisions to the Falepili Union in order to safeguard Tuvalu's sovereignty. Australian officials reportedly welcomed Teo's election, as they were concerned about the potential implications of a change in diplomatic allegiance. The new administration has acknowledged that there were insufficient consultations with citizens prior to the signing of the agreement.
