Trump's lawyer challenges E Jean Carroll verdict citing testimony of other accusers
Donald Trump's lawyer, John Sauer, has argued in an appeals court that a verdict finding Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll should be thrown out. The main points of contention include the admissibility of testimony from two other women who claim to have been sexually mistreated by Trump in the past, and the inclusion of a 2005 "Access Hollywood" video in which Trump boasts about forcing himself on women. Trump himself has responded to the allegations by lashing out at the accusers, labeling Carroll's account as "impractical" and "made-up". During a court hearing, Trump's legal team sought to overturn a $5 million verdict. In a separate appearance, Trump used graphic language to characterize the case, which could potentially expose him to further legal challenges.
I'm running for president, and I have all these cases all of a sudden come.
It's so false. It's a made up, fabricated story by somebody, I think, initially, just looking to promote a book.
This case is a textbook example of implausible allegations being propped up by highly inflammatory, inadmissible propensity evidence.
I've said before and I'll say it again: all options are on the table.
E. Jean Carroll brought this case because Donald Trump sexually assaulted her in 1996, in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman, and then defamed her in 2022 by claiming that she was crazy and made the whole thing up.
We will monitor his comments and consider further legal action if he persists.
