Trump Nominee Pete Hegseth Faces Senate Scrutiny Over Inexperience and Credentials
Pete Hegseth, a 44-year-old former Fox News host and decorated veteran, has been nominated as Secretary of Defense, sparking controversy due to allegations of past misconduct and divisive remarks. During a contentious Senate confirmation hearing, Democrats questioned him on allegations of sexual assault, infidelity, and inappropriate workplace behavior. Hegseth defended his qualifications despite sharp criticisms, including Senator Tim Kaine questioning his character over personal matters. Concerns were also raised about his views on diversity, equity, and inclusion, including opposition to women in combat and controversial remarks about race in military leadership. While the hearing was combative, Hegseth avoided major missteps, maintaining Republican support.
What's astonishing about the hearing is just how little focus there has been on the bread and butter of what the secretary of defence has to do, which is protect the nation, and ensure you have a military capable of winning conflicts.
Mr Hegseth, I do not believe that you are qualified to meet the overwhelming demands of this job.
Mr Hegseth, I'm quoting you in a podcast: 'Women shouldn't be in combat at all'.
We have hundreds of women who serve in the infantry, lethal members of our military ... But you degrade them.
If all those allegations were false, then what do you mean you changed and reformed.
Can you so casually cheat on a second wife and cheat on the mother of a child two months before? How is that completely cleared?
All he did today was reaffirm to me that he's not qualified for this job.
You say you care about keeping our armed forces strong ... then let's not lower the standards for you. You sir, are a no-go at this station.
He couldn't answer some of the most basic questions I asked of him.
Regarding his personal conduct, Mr Hegseth has admitted to falling short, as we all do from time to time.
Warfighting, lethality, meritocracy, standards, and readiness. That's it. That is my job.
Every single senior officer will be reviewed based on meritocracy, standards, lethality and commitment to lawful orders they will be given.
I have been falsely charged -- completely, fully investigated, and completely cleared.
I am not a perfect person, but redemption is real.
Everyone from the top, from the most senior general to the most lowly private, [we] will ensure that they're treated fairly.
