Trump Meets with Zelenskyy Amid Rising Tensions Over US Support for Ukraine
Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting on September 27, where they discussed Ukraine's defense and the ongoing conflict with Russia. Trump has expressed skepticism about US funding for Ukraine and has defended Russian President Vladimir Putin, sparking concerns among foreign policy hawks that a second Trump administration would be detrimental to Ukraine's defense. During the meeting, Zelensky presented his "victory plan" to Trump, and Trump stated that he looks forward to seeing progress in the conflict. Trump has also claimed that Putin would not have invaded Ukraine if he were president. The meeting comes at a critical time in the Russia-Ukraine war, with Election Day nearing and Ukraine seeking to shore up support from Republicans. Zelensky has requested US and British long-range weapons to aid in the conflict, but Trump's stance on the issue remains unclear.
The president wants it to end, and he wants it to end as quickly as possible. He wants a fair transaction to take place.
We need to do everything to pressure him to stop this war. He is in our territory. That's most important to understand. He is in our territory.
I think we have common view that the war in Ukraine has to be stopped, and Putin can't win, and Ukraine has to prevail.
I presented our Victory Plan, and we thoroughly reviewed the situation in Ukraine and the consequences of the war for our people. Many details were discussed. We share the common view that the war in Ukraine must be stopped. Putin cannot win. Ukrainians must prevail.
Instead, they are proposals for surrender, which is dangerous and unacceptable.
These proposals are the same as those of Putin, and let us be clear, they are not proposals for peace.
At some point, it has to end. [Zelenskyy's] gone through hell. This country has gone through hell like few countries have ever… Nobody's ever seen anything like it.
It is a complicated puzzle. Too many people dead. Too many beautiful cities.
We have a very good relationship. And I also have a very good relationship, as you know, with President Putin. And if we win, I think we're going to get it resolved very quickly.
And I think if we win, I think we're going to get it [the war] resolved very quickly.
It's an honour to have the president with us, and he's been through a lot.
I watched this poor guy yesterday at the United Nations.
It's a shame, but this is a war that should have never happened and we'll get it solved.
If they made a bad deal, it would've been much better. They would've given up a little bit and everybody would be living and every building would be built and every tower would be aging for another 2,000 years.
We both want to see this end, and we both want to see a fair deal made.
He's been through a tremendous amount, like probably nobody else, almost nobody else in history, if you really get right down to it, and we're going to have a discussion and see what we could come up with.
That [package] is helpful. And I think that subsequently we'll hear that Storm Shadow and Scalp, the British and French missiles, will be approved for use, so there's better news for Zelensky to come.
