The sale is a result of Jones's company, Free Speech Systems, being forced into bankruptcy after a 2022 defamation lawsuit by the families of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims, which Jones had falsely claimed was a hoax. The families won a $1.4 billion judgment against Jones and his company, leading to the auction of Infowars and other company assets to compensate creditors. The Onion, backed by the families of the Sandy Hook victims, secured the winning bid.
