Thai court sentences son of Spanish TV star to life in prison for murder and dismemberment
Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, a 30-year-old Spanish national, was found guilty of murdering and dismembering Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a Colombian surgeon, in August 2023 on the island of Koh Phangan. Sancho, a chef and YouTube personality, had met Arrieta online and the two had agreed to meet in person. However, the pair got into a fight, which led to Sancho killing and dismembering Arrieta. Sancho then chopped up the body and concealed the parts in plastic bags, distributing them around the island. Sancho was initially sentenced to death, but the court commuted the sentence to life imprisonment due to his cooperation during the trial. The court found Sancho guilty of premeditated murder, and he was given a life sentence. Sancho is also required to pay 4.4 million baht (around US$130,000) in compensation.
The court saw his confession to the murder was useful during the trial. So the court commuted the sentence to life imprisonment.
Before committing the murder, the defendant had bought a knife, gloves, plastic bags, garbage bags, (a cleaning sponge), cleaver knife and a saw.
We didn't expect it (the life sentence) but we must accept what the Thai justice has said, we have to respect it.
We definitely do not want the death penalty because our family is very religious.
The plaintiff is satisfied with the sentence because he (Sancho) will be put in prison for life and they (the plaintiff) receive some financial compensation.
The verdict has been delivered, both sides have the right to appeal according to Thai law.
I am sorry that his family was not able to bury him properly. I'm sorry for what I did after the death.
I am sorry that a life has been lost and that parents have lost a son.
