Tesla sales slump off the back of Elon Musk's alienating political views
According to the provided articles, Tesla's sales have slumped significantly worldwide. In January, Australian sales dropped by a third, with electric vehicle (EV) sales making up only 4.4% of the market. This decline is attributed to a shift towards alternative EV brands instead of Tesla. In Germany, Tesla sales collapsed by 59% in January, with the company selling half as many cars as it did in January 2024. The drop in sales is linked to Elon Musk's controversial outbursts and his vocal support for the far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. Official data from Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority confirms this, showing that only 1,277 new Tesla vehicles were registered in January, a significant decline from previous years when Tesla was the best-selling electric car brand in Germany.
The research we've conducted shows that around a third of people would actually be put off from buying the product because of Elon Musk. It's probably unlike any other brand in terms of its close ties to the [boss].
We saw a big surge in EVs starting about two years ago.
It's an extraordinary situation, because the Tesla products are really quite admired because of their quality, but some people are just finding it really difficult to either buy or retain those those cars.
Nobody wants to be associated with it... Tesla and Musk are almost inextricably linked.
