Tens of thousands protest against unsustainable tourism in the Canary Islands
Tens of thousands of people protested in the Canary Islands, Spain, under the banner "Canarias tiene un límite" (The Canaries have a limit), calling for a reconsideration of the tourism strategy and a freeze on visitor numbers. Eleven members of Canarias se Agota had been on hunger strike for a week to protest against the construction of two large luxury developments in southern Spain. The protests drew an estimated 57,000 people according to Spanish media reports. There seems to be a consensus among protesters that mass tourism is overwhelming the Atlantic archipelago and demands action to limit visitor numbers and prevent uncontrolled development.
