Sweden confirms first case of mpox outside of Africa
ai generated text
Sweden has confirmed the first case outside Africa of the more dangerous variant of mpox, which is the same strain that has surged in the Democratic Republic of Congo since September 2023. The person infected was staying in a part of Africa where there was a large outbreak of the disease. The WHO has declared a global public health emergency for the second time in two years. Health officials in Sweden have confirmed that the person infected recently sought care in Stockholm. The World Health Organization has stated that more imported Clade 1 cases are likely to be confirmed in Europe soon.
We have now also during the afternoon had confirmation that we have one case in Sweden of the more grave type of mpox, the one called clade I.
Just like in any infectious disease response, we need to know who is sick so these people do not infect other people. So testing and surveillance is the key.
And by declaring a global health emergency, we really want to make sure that all governments are on alert for any mpox cases on their territory.
We need Western solidarity to save lives around the world.
On top of outbreaks of other mpox clades in DRC and other countries in Africa, it's clear that a coordinated international response is needed to stop these outbreaks and save lives.
The emergence of a case on the European continent could spur rapid international spread of mpox.
A case in Sweden most likely means dozens of undetected cases in Europe.
