Sweden confirms first case of mpox outside of Africa

Sweden has confirmed the first case outside Africa of the more dangerous variant of mpox, which is the same strain that has surged in the Democratic Republic of Congo since September 2023. The person infected was staying in a part of Africa where there was a large outbreak of the disease. The WHO has declared a global public health emergency for the second time in two years. Health officials in Sweden have confirmed that the person infected recently sought care in Stockholm. The World Health Organization has stated that more imported Clade 1 cases are likely to be confirmed in Europe soon.
